Datum Point

Using the point from which seismic measurement equipment was calibrated when the the building was a working observatory.

Sounds recorded in and around the building are mixed using reverb modelled on the building sub basement, creating a sonic model of Bidston Observatory.
Forming one strand of a conversation about remote sensing & digital care and informed by the study of healing plants and fungus, Lichen was composed in dialogue with Karisa Senavitis’ video essay contribution to ’Witchcare’, a conference by The Witch Institute (https://witchinstitute.com/), in 2021.
The main melodic and rhythmic themes make use midi patterns algorithmically modelled on the growth of tree roots. A call and response between the sound and imagery. This ongoing conversation is part of the reading group Knowledge Is A Does (KIAD)

Trans Object

Gust Compression Composition

100 year old wind speed data is converted into a midi scale and sequenced through an analogue synthesiser while recordings taken from contact mics attached to an antique annemometer provide percussive clangs and groans.
Predicted weather data from the following week is also sequenced and played on another synth. In this way, sound can be imagined as folding temporalities over and on top of one another. The weather station becomes a time traveling device.

I provided the sound track to Emma Frankland's short film 'Trans Object'. as part of a performance project taking place over 6 months in 2021. Emma Frankland (UK) & Tamarra (Indonesia) exchange digital postcards inspired by trans life.
